Most people don't research HVAC installation until they've already decided to replace something. Install day, start to finish

The stage worth paying attention to is the last one. Evacuation, charge verification, airflow measurement, and static pressure readings are what separate a system that runs efficiently for fifteen years from one that limps along and dies at nine. Commissioning is also the first thing a crew cuts when they're running behind on a Friday afternoon. Ask, in writing, that the commissioning readings be documented and left with you.
Everything before that is fairly mechanical. Old refrigerant is recovered, power and gas are isolated, the old units come out, new equipment is set and levelled, and connections are made. Competent installers make this look boring — because it should be.
Size it before you order anything
A Manual J load calculation sizes the system to your actual house — square footage, insulation R-values, window area and orientation, air infiltration. It is not the same thing as matching whatever tonnage was there before, which just inherits the previous installer's guess.
Oversized equipment is the most common — and most expensive — mistake in residential HVAC. It short-cycles, wears out compressors faster, and never runs long enough to pull humidity out of the air, which is why a brand-new oversized system leaves the house feeling clammy at the "right" temperature.

What ships, and what doesn't

This is the gap that turns a one-day install into two visits and a service-call surcharge.
A matched system arrives as three boxes: condenser, indoor coil, and furnace or air handler, with the factory refrigerant charge in the outdoor unit. The line set, electrical whip and disconnect, condenser pad, condensate drain assembly, and duct transitions are separate items — either you order them or the installer brings them.

The 2026 refrigerant transition
New residential HVAC systems now use lower-GWP refrigerants under the EPA's 2025 Technology Transitions rule. Depending on the manufacturer, that means R-32 or R-454B has replaced R-410A in new equipment. Both are A2L-class refrigerants — classed as mildly flammable, with different handling requirements, tighter charge limits, and in some cases mandatory leak detection.
For you, that translates to one question for your installer: are they current on A2L equipment. Any competent shop will be by now, but it's worth asking rather than assuming — particularly with a smaller outfit that mostly services older systems and hasn't done many new installs since the transition. Can you install it yourself?
Honestly: usually not, and we'd rather say so than sell you a system that ends up sitting on your garage floor for six months.
A ducted split system needs refrigerant handling under EPA Section 608 certification, a vacuum pump, brazing skills, gas piping or high-voltage electrical work, and a permit. Those are licensed-trade tasks in most jurisdictions, and getting them wrong voids the warranty, kills efficiency, and creates real safety risk with an A2L refrigerant on board.
The exception is genuine DIY-designated mini splits, which ship with pre-charged quick-connect line sets and are designed to be installed by a homeowner without a vacuum pump or EPA certification. That's a specific product category, not a general workaround — check the product page for the model you're considering to confirm it's an actual DIY-rated unit before you order.
